Can HIV/AIDS be misdiagnosed as ME/CFS?
I've been diagnosed with ME by my GP after having several months of fatigue, enlarged glands, night sweats and flu-like symptoms. A friend says that HIV/AIDS can cause very similar symptoms in the early stages and that I probably ought to have an HIV blood test – which hasn't been done as far as I know.
Having had several sexual partners, some casual, in the past, I suppose I could be at risk. Unfortunately, this isn't the sort of medical query that I can discuss with my GP because he is a family friend.
Night sweats
Do people with ME have night sweats? This is a new symptom that is causing myself and my partner considerable distress.
Treatment: Thiamine
There are “medical people” on the internet claiming that high doses of a supplement called thiamine are a safe and effective new treatment for ME. What is thiamine? Is there any evidence to support this claim? And could taking high doses of thiamine cause any harm?
Neuroinflammation
I keep reading about what is called ‘neuroinflammation' in relation to research into ME/CFS. I assume this means inflammation in the nervous system. But is this the same as encephalomyelitis (the E in ME)? I know that encephalomyelitis is largely dismissed by many doctors and is the reason why some doctors refuse to even use the name ME/ myalgic encephalomyelitis.
Testing: HIV
I saw a locum GP recently and explained I was diagnosed with ME about ten years ago. He asked me if I had ever considered having an HIV test to exclude the possibility of my symptoms being caused by HIV/ AIDS. Why would a GP ask such a question?
