Alternative treatments: Flotation tank

ME Essential Winter 2023

A friend of mine who has a painful rheumatic disease has been using a local floatation tank to help relieve her pain. I have quite a lot of ME related joint and muscle pain and the drugs that have been prescribed are of very limited benefit.

Is this something that’s worth trying for pain in ME? Are there any potential side-effects?

Treatments: Unproven Claims

ME Essential Spring 2023

Looking around the internet I was surprised and disappointed to find a whole range of companies and therapists selling treatments and ‘recovery programmes' that they claim can successfully be used to treat or even cure ME/CFS. Some of these companies are clearly making a lot of money out of desperate people who are willing to try anything that is claimed to help. What can be done to stop these scams?

Treatment: Bromelain

ME Essential Winter 2022

I have read several newspaper articles about the use of this natural plant-based treatment for pain relief, especially in arthritis and muscle soreness. But is there any evidence that it can help to reduce muscle pain in ME? Because none of the drug treatments that I have been prescribed by my GP have helped.

Alternative Testing: Allergies

ME Essential Autumn 2021

I am currently seeing a chiropractor who has been quite helpful with my joint pain. The chiropractor is also recommending something called kinesiology testing – which is supposed to identify allergies – for my ME. I have always been rather suspicious of commercial allergy testing. Please could you explain what kinesiology is and whether it is worth spending money on.

Allergies: Hay Fever

ME Essential Autumn 2020

Is hay fever more common in people with ME? I’m in my midthirties and never had hay fever before being diagnosed with ME several years ago. Every summer and autumn I now have the full list of hay fever symptoms – runny nose, blocked nose and red itching eyes. This year it has been worse than ever and my chest has been wheezy as well. MY GP thinks it may have triggered mild asthma. And is it safe to use a steroid nasal spray for hay fever if you have ME?

The Microbiota: Faecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT)

ME Essential Autumn 2017

I’ve read some positive feedback on the internet about a new form of treatment called a faecal microbiota transplant (FMT). It is supposed to help with a number of chronic conditions, including ME. Apparently there is a private gut clinic in the UK that is carrying out this type of treatment. Do you know if and how FMT works? Is it safe? And how much will it cost?
