Questions in the Category: Cortisol

Test: Synacthen

ME Essential Spring 2023

A blood test has shown that I have a low level of the hormone cortisol. As a result I am now being referred to hospital to have a synacthen test to assess my adrenal gland function. As this test involves the use of a drug that stimulates steroid production is it likely to cause any problems for someone with ME/CFS? Or could the use of a steroid be a way of treating ME/CFS?

Symptoms: Hyponatraemia (Low sodium levels)

ME Essential Winter 2023

I’ve been feeling generally unwell and more fatigued – mentally and physically, for the past few months.
My GP ordered some routine blood tests – all of which were normal apart from having a slightly lower than normal level of sodium in the blood. My GP isn’t too concerned and is going to repeat the blood test. Could a low sodium level be caused by having ME?

Treatment: Low Dose Steroids

ME Essential Autumn 2022

I’m having joint problems at the moment and my consultant wants to inject a steroid into the joint to calm things down. I’m concerned that this could make my ME/CFS worse because I thought that people with ME/CFS should not take steroids. What do you suggest I do?

Addison's Disease

ME Essential Summer 2020

I was interested to see the item on Addison’s disease in the Winter issue of ME Essential as I have a close friend with this rare disease and it obviously has some interesting symptom overlaps with ME/CFS. So is there any evidence that adrenal gland failure, and steroid hormone production, could also be involved in ME/CFS? If so, would it be worth looking at steroids as a possible form of treatment for ME/CFS?

Symptom: Fainting

ME Essential Autumn 2017

Like most people with ME I have problems with balance and find it difficult to sustain any sort of activity that involves prolonged standing. I sometimes feel faint when standing up but have never actually fainted until recently. This has now happened on three occasions – all for no apparent reason. Fortunately, someone has always been with me and I haven’t injured myself. I usually recover very quickly but don’t normally feel as though I’m ‘back to normal’ till the next day. My GP took my pulse and blood pressure (which was low) and decided it was probably ‘just anther part of having ME’. I have been given some self-help advice about keeping well hydrated with water and not standing up too quickly but I’m concerned that there may be something else going wrong in addition to my ME. What would you advise?

Stress and ME/CFS

ME Essential Summer 2017

When I first developed ME, this was triggered by an infection. But I was also under a lot of physical stress (at work) and mental stress (at home) at the time. I know that ME isn't just another type of stress disorder but stress does seem to play a role in both triggering and causing exacerbations in some people with ME. So what do we know about the role of stress in ME? And has there been any research into the role of stress?

Treatment: Tumeric & Circumin

ME Essential Summer 2017

There is little evidence to indicate that herbal and Plant remedies are of any value in treating ME/CFS, or symptoms, and can sometimes cause harm. But there are some interesting reports on the internet forums from people who say that they have been helped by taking turmeric. And I believe that there is also some interesting research evidence to show that it can help to reduce inflammation — which could be of benefit in ME/CFS. Do you have any views on this?
