Making a splash at the Roman baths | 13 January 2020

The Times Weddings and Engagements, Sunday 11th January 2020.

Lucy Groom, 31, a partner at a design agency, and Jade Little, 33, an accountant at Barclays, were married on September 7, 2019 at the Roman Baths in Bath

Lucy decided to be herself on her first date with Jade, after the pair had met online in 2016.

“It was the first time I had gone on a date and not tried to be what the other person thought I would be,” Lucy says. “I’d had enough of dating and it not going very well.”

To Jade, Lucy’s relaxed approach did not have the feel of a first date. “She was telling me so many stories that we were firmly in friend zone.”

Realising that she needed to make more effort, Lucy “upped her flirt”. A few days later, they went on a second date. “Things moved very speedily,” says Lucy, who spent a lot of time at Jade’s house in Rotherhithe, southeast London.

Essex-born Lucy studied graphic design at Central Saint Martins and is now a partner at a design agency, Imagist. Jade grew up in Oxfordshire and studied business administration at the University of Bath.

Jade describes Lucy as kind, compassionate, patient and fun. “Lucy’s very sociable and outgoing,” Jade says. “I’m a bit shyer.”

In 2015 Jade was diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome. “It’s like having flu without a runny nose,” she says. “I can’t lift my arms, or my legs, or my head. I feel really groggy and weak.”

Lucy admires Jade’s confidence and inner strength. “I saw things in her that I couldn’t see in myself,” she says. “She is an incredibly supportive person even though she struggles every day.”
