Learna CPD module for healthcare professionals updated!

Learna’s free, highly rated CPD-accredited module on ME/CFS, available for GPs and healthcare professionals, has been updated to reflect evolving biomedical understanding of ME/CFS.

How was the Learna ME/CFS CPD module created?

The module was created by Dr Nina Muirhead and updated as part of the Learn about ME project, funded by the Scottish Government, and led by Action for ME, supported by the ME Association and #MEAction Scotland

Dr Nina Muirhead says: “One of the most common mistakes clinicians make is underestimating ME/CFS. Evidence shows there is a huge impact on the quality of life of patients and their family members. Patients have been ignored and stigmatised and those who are most severely impacted are least able to access the healthcare that they need. Scientific understanding of post-viral disease and associated symptoms and syndromes is revolutionising how patients should be treated.”

The charities are now working with Nina to promote the online module to GPs and AHPs across Scotland, and to continue producing complementary podcasts and webinars featuring insight and guidance from patients and professionals.

What's included in the module?

The module, which is free to access and complete, contains 10 clinical case studies and is designed for GPs and healthcare professionals to improve their understanding of:

  • the main diagnostic features of ME/CFS
  • identifying post-exertional malaise as a key feature of ME/CFS
  • recognising the importance of early, accurate diagnosis
  • identifying conditions related to ME/CFS, such as POTs and Long Covid
  • evaluating the needs of individuals when creating symptom management plans.

Learn About ME podcast #13: Learn about ME and Multimorbities

Listen to our latest Learn about ME podcast episode, which is regularly published alongside the Learna CPD Module, and learn more about ME/CFS, Long Covid, PoTS and other similar conditions.

This 13th episode for Learn about ME project focuses on multi-morbidities that commonly accompany ME/CFS or Long Covid.

The episode features Dr Amy Small, who discusses how GPs can support people with these common conditions and what else they need to understand:

“What I want my colleagues to do is to really understand what post-exertional malaise means, what that feels like, how that can affect a whole person's being, every aspect of their life.”

You can also hear from Mary, who has dysautonomia as well as ME, and the impact this has on their health and life:

“I would like to have a plan, if not a treatment plan, then at least regular reviews, basic tests, discussion about any new symptoms that may have arisen to see whether they're attributable to any or not reviews of medications. Perhaps in my particular circumstances, a regular ECG because of the medication I'm taking. And I would really love if at least some of this could be done at home. I haven't seen my GP in person since 2019 because they won't conduct home visits.”
