Golf challenge – Will to eat all his greens for M.E. research on 31st May

Eating up your greens is this year’s latest fundraising sensation and this one’s a cracker! Will Wright will metaphorically munch his way through loads of greens with a golf course challenge taking up a hole day at the end of May.

Will, who plays off a handicap of five, is set to play 100 holes at the Bridport and West Dorset Golf Course on Wednesday, 31st May for two great causes – the ME Association’s Ramsay Research Fund and Opal Webster-Philp’s South Coast-based ME/CFS Alliance.

To put it in perspective, the challenge will be one long marathon round one of the most iconic courses on the south coast.

“The distance on the day will be between 25 and 30 miles, depending on how straight I hit the ball. I’ll be starting out at first light and hope to finish by 9pm at the latest”, said Will, who is already shaping up for the challenge by walking 10 miles a time with a loaded rucksack on his back.

Will, who lives with his partner Mica in south Manchester, will be accompanied by a couple of his best mates Tom Clifton and Will Barnes, who will play a few holes and caddy for him when the going gets really tough.

Missing from that little band of brothers will be ME sufferer Sam Boreham, who’s had a really difficult time himself of late. He became sick after failing to recover from labyrinthitis in November 2021 and is now only slowly recovering. The four friends first met up 10 years ago in Newbury, Berkshire, where they all came from originally.

Will works from home as a sustainability management consultant. He said: “Sam is one of my closest friends and I wanted to do something to help make him better. So I landed on this endurance event and fundraising for it.

“I chose an endurance event as this is something that most people with ME CFS can't do, and by doing it, raise awareness for the debilitating nature of the disease.”

Wil picked the Bridport and West Dorset course perched on the cliff’s edge overlooking the historic Jurassic coastline because it’s in the heartland of the ME/CFS Alliance think tank. It’s where his parents, Helen and Nick Wright, play. And the views are just sheer, blooming lovely!

Have a great day, Will, and please tell us all about it when it’s over.
