BBC News: New service for Highland chronic fatigue syndrome [ME/CFS] sufferers

BBC News has reported on a new ME/CFS service being set up for people in the Highlands. Read extracts of the article below, as well as comments from the ME Association's Healthcare 4 ME team, who met with a representative from NHS Highland in December.

Extracts:

NHS Highland is to launch a virtual support service for people with chronic fatigue syndrome.

NHS Highland said it was expanding its long Covid service to offer online consultations to sufferers in the Highlands and Argyll and Bute.

From spring, patients referred by GPs will be offered personalised strategies aimed at alleviating their symptoms.

MEA Healthcare 4 ME Comment:

We welcome NHS Highland’s work to develop a symptom-focused, medically led ME/CFS service aligned with NICE NG206, following the Scottish Government’s long-overdue commitment to fund specialist services for ME/CFS and related conditions.

Following our meeting with a representative from NHS Highland in December, we are encouraged by the commitment to meaningful patient involvement in service design. Drawing on extensive engagement with people with ME/CFS, H4ME highlighted the importance of validation, early education around post-exertional malaise, holistic support with welfare, employment and daily living, access to symptom-specific referrals and mobility aids, routine follow-up, and the availability of remote and home-based care for people with severe ME.

We are encouraged that our recommendations appear achievable within this new service framework and look forward to supporting its development.
