A mother and daughter climbed up to the 15th century tower at the top of Glastonbury Tor to mark a special occasion yesterday – then they went home for tea!
Dawn Brown and daughter Charlie were delighted to get to the top to mark the end of Dawn’s extended 60-mile walk through some of Somerset’s most glorious scenery to raise money for the ME Association.
But then they didn’t march down to the bottom of the hill to join thousands of other people flocking into Worthy Farm which had just opened its gates to welcome revellers to the world-famous Glastonbury Festival.
Instead, said Dawn from Burnham-on-Sea in Somerset:
“At the top of the tor, we saw the whole of my walk through the Mendip Hills laid out beneath us and we could see the festival getting started seven or eight miles away.
“Charlie had not been to Glastonbury before and we thought what a good way this would be to finish the walk together for the ME Association. It was quite an achievement for Charlie, who is now recovering on the sofa.”
Dawn began the walk earlier this year to mark the 10th anniversary of Charlie becoming ill with ME while she was at university. It was a time to reflect, raise awareness of a life-draining condition and to support research, she told us at the time.
Photos show Dawn and her daughter Charlie on Glastonbury Tor on Wednesday.

Originally, Dawn had wanted to walk 60 miles in stages through the Mendips for her sponsored walk. But completion was delayed when husband Graham became ill and then sadly by the death of his father.
After walking 50 miles – ten miles short of her target – she decided to deliver on her promise by walking seven miles walk along the beautiful beach at Burnham, where the famous lighthouse on stilts can be found, and then the final three-mile stretch to Glastonbury Tor.
“We’ve finished this 60-mile walk at last. It’s taken longer than expected… but we got there!”
Charlie has recovered well enough to be able to move out of the family home and for the past two years has been living independently in Exeter – where she has a part-time job in the box office at the city’s Northcott Theatre.
Dawn’s fundraiser has been hugely successful, raising over £1,300 so far.
If you would like to congratulate Dawn on completing the walk, a small donation would be very welcome. Please donate by clicking on the link below:
