ME Essential Winter 2025

Question

I’ve read that an electrical device called a TENS machine can sometimes be helpful in relieving muscle and joint pain. Is this a device that might help with pain in ME? And is it safe to use?

Answer

Transcutaneous (meaning through the skin) electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is claimed to be an effective method of pain control that doesn't involve the use of drugs – although it can be used in combination with pain-killing drugs. The device works by sending soothing impulses through your skin and nerve fibres. It is claimed that the electrical impulses stimulate the brain to start producing natural painrelieving chemicals called endorphins, as well as blocking some of the pain signals reaching the brain.

A TENS machine consists of a portable handheld unit which is connected by leads to selfadhesive electronic pads, which are placed on the skin. Although this is an approach that appears to be free from side-effects, it should still be discussed with your GP because a TENS machine should not be used to try and relieve pain that hasn't been properly diagnosed.

A TENS machine shouldn't be used if you have a pacemaker or have a serious heart condition, and it may not be suitable if you have epilepsy. So always read and follow the manufacturer recommendations – especially in relation to skin care.

TENS machines can be purchased from pharmacies such as Boots where they cost from £20 to £200. A GP or hospital pain clinic may have units that can be loaned out free and some pharmacies do a fee-paying TENS rental service.
