Free event: ‘M.E. Question Time’ takes centre stage in Huddersfield – Saturday, October 8

October 5, 2011

NEWS: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Dozens of people will be at a conference being held in Huddersfield on Saturday, October 8 – wanting some answers about a poorly-understood illness that has kept many of them ill and off work for years.

They'll be at the Textiles Centre of Excellence in Red Doles Lane for an ‘M.E. Question Time' for a free-ranging question-and-answer session with some of the best-known experts in the country on M.E., otherwise known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

The event is being co-hosted by the Kirklees Independent M.E. Support Group, whose chairperson Jo Cameron-Symes (pictured) said: “We are teaming up with the national ME Association, who will be fielding some of the big names in the ME world. And the audience will have a huge number of questions to ask – including why has it taken so long to find a widely recognised diagnostic test for the illness and why – over 50 years since the illness got its modern name of M.E – is there still no cure for it?”

The Question Time starts at 2pm, there will be no charge for admission and all will be welcome. Among the well-known figures on the panel will be Dr Charles Shepherd, medical adviser to the ME Association, counsellor Elizabeth Turp who wrote the recently published handbook Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/M.E Support for Family and Friends, education specialist Jane Colby who runs a charity called the Young ME Sufferers Trust and dietitian Sue Luscombe.

The event will finish about 4.30pm to allow people to get away easily before the end of the big Huddersfield Town v Stevenage game across the road.

Jo Cameron-Symes added: “M.E. is a hugely devastating illness which – through no fault of their own – keeps children away from school and adults out of work. And it can go on for years – with very little reliable treatment available from the health service. The event is a must for all those patients, partners and friends who are fed up with feeling they're kept very much in the dark about developments in healthcare, benefits and research.”
