They were very nice and the pacing guidance I received from them was pretty good. They said there was nothing more they could do for me though as I already knew most of it after years of suffering. This was when I was still relatively mild - no idea what more they could do now I'm not.
ME/CFS SERVICE

Within Mental Health department

Please note: this service falls under the Neuropsychiatry service at the Barberry Centre (Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Foundation Trust) which offers a service for people over 16 with a Neuropsychiatric condition. It operates out of a secure Mental Health Unit and is led by a neuropsychiatrist.

We offer a responsive and accessible service through a multidisciplinary approach for service users aged 16 or above with CFS of any degree of severity. Referrals are requested through Single Point of Access – Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Foundation Trust.

We accept referrals from GPs and other services. We accept out-of-area referrals but funding may need to be secured before an appointment can be offered.

For service users with a previously established diagnosis of CFS, initial triage assessments are carried out by a nurse or an occupational therapist.

For those service users without a diagnosis, the initial assessment will be carried out by a consultant neuropsychiatrist. This will include exclusion of secondary causes of chronic fatigue based on clinical history. Additional investigations including lab tests, imaging studies and onward referrals to other specialists may be requested as clinically indicated.

After the initial assessment and the confirmation of diagnosis the multidisciplinary team will discuss each case and decide on follow up care which may progress through further appointments with a consultant, nurse or occupational therapist, or through group format.

Our intervention is based on principles of energy management and pacing, delivered individually or through group format. Our consultant neuropsychiatrist may also recommend pharmacological treatment as indicated.
