Following a period of over a year, during which the Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals ME/CFS service has not been accepting new referrals, the Trust has now confirmed that the service is expected to reopen to new referrals from 21 September 2026. The MEA healthcare team has been seeking further information about the service, including its medical oversight and the provision available for people with severe and very severe ME/CFS. The commissioner for the service at NHS South West London Integrated Care Board (SWL ICB) has confirmed that they have been engaging with Epsom and St Helier Trust and have been clear that the service should reopen to new referrals in line with the commissioned service.
The commissioner has also acknowledged that there are wider issues around demand and capacity and has said that this will continue to be monitored through its contract management arrangements. The Trust has confirmed that information about the reopening will be communicated to GPs across South West London so that patients can be referred appropriately. We welcome the reopening of the service, while continuing to seek clarity about the scope and clinical provision of the service, particularly for those living with severe and very severe ME/CFS.
