Have you heard of social prescribers?
In a recent meeting with a social prescriber working across a large primary care network in Oxfordshire, we heard how their role can make a real difference for people living with long-term conditions like ME/CFS. Social prescribers are based in every GP practice and are there to support people with the non-medical issues that may affect health and quality of life. This could include help accessing benefits advice, support with housing or aids in the home or signposting to services for those experiencing social isolation or even domestic abuse. Importantly, you don’t need to wait for a GP referral – social prescribers accept self-referrals or referrals from anyone who may also be involved in your care.  Many also run condition-specific support groups and are keen to learn more about ME/CFS to support better those affected.
We have been invited to give a talk to social prescribers within the BOB ICB area and warmly welcome the opportunity. We look forward to working with this important group of professionals to improve understanding of ME/CFS and ensure those affected receive the support they need.
