Book Description
Dr Ramsay did more than any other physician to legitimise this devastating disease. His description of the classic symptoms of M.E. has not been bettered, and this book is highly recommended.
The book is his account of the oubreak of M.E. at the Royal Free Hospital, London, in 1955, which resulted in the closure of the hospital for some weeks. Dr Ramsay was the hospital's consultant in infectious diseases principally responsible for managing the outbreak. The observations he made in this book have been described as M.E.'s Rosetta Stone in that they unlocked the understanding of this illness for future generations.
The books draws favourable and detailed comparisons with many other contemporary outbreaks of M.E. round the world.
Dr Ramsay tells us that he lived “to rue the day” when he invited two psychiatrists, Drs McEvedy and Beard, to review his case notes of the outbreak at the Royal Free – the consequences of which have clouded thinking about the illness to this day.
Dr Ramsay went on to become a founding member of the UK charity, The ME Association, which was proud to have been given permission by the family to undertake the reprint of this second edition in 2005, followed 20 years later by this e-edition.
