“The Pilot ME-CFS Rehabilitation Service offers appointments to patients on a Thursday and Friday at the Astley Ainslie Hospital (AAH). This is a multidisciplinary service. Patients are seen individually and many may see both a physiotherapist and a psychologist during the course of their therapy.
“A collaborative, self-management lifestyle programme informed by patient centred care, based on individualised formulation. An initial assessment is undertaken and then therapy may be offered to the patient. This will be individualised, based on the patients needs and topics may be taken from the following menu:

  • What is ME/CFS? And your story
  • Activity Management and Pacing
  • Relaxation
  • Goal setting
  • Improving Sleep
  • Stress and stress management techniques
  • Problem solving
  • Managing your Mood
  • ME-CFS and Dealing with Others
  • Relapse prevention and set back planning
  • Long term planning and keeping it going

“The service also offers a 3 month and 6 month follow-up.  There is evidence that rehabilitation approaches can be beneficial in helping some patients to manage their symptoms and can help in the recovery process, although it is true that no one treatment has been identified yet that is effective for everyone.  Positive outcomes of attending the ME-CFS service have been reported by patients.”
