Intrepid adventurers Ed Stafford and Luke Collyer fly out from Britain today for South America – to prepare for the start of their 4,000-mile trek along the Amazon River for The ME Association and five other charities. They are pictured here with Ed's sister Janie, who has ME.

They'll be providing regular video blogs of their incredible journey from source to mouth of the world's longest river at their Walk the Amazon website.

One of the ‘back home' projects they are supporting is The ME Association's tissue bank project, which aims to fund a hospital-based facility which will provide medical researchers with vital material that proves that ME/CFS is physical in origin. The tissue bank project got a terrific boost at a launch party held aboard HMS President, moored on the Thames in the City of London, on February. The event cleared over £7,000 which will be split between project and Project Peru, the charity that helped organise the event with MEA trustee Ba Stafford.
